August 4-7, 2008. Attended a 4-day workshop offered by PPGNY’s Long Island Photo Workshop. From the six classes offered, chose Dave Black’s “Light is the Greatest Influence“. His extensive work for Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, National Geographic, Time, ESPN Magazine, and United States Olympic Committee involves mastery of lighting techniques, some of which we covered during this period: light painting, off-camera flash, and studio strobes. I was familiar with a number of tips he shared but also learned many more. A huge advantage of such a workshop is a hands-on experience when each of us experimented with a newly-covered technique.
It wouldn’t be such a success if not for two great fellas, Benny and Dana, who recruited local people as models. What a mix it was… ballerina, boxer, guitar player, body builder, jockey, and a tattooed couple. Dave was great in teaching us how to “work” the models, too. Check out More to see some of the images of those people.
Among my newly acquainted friends-photographers is David Klein. I plan to involve him in my artistic photo project, unique and challenging in nature. He offered a nice upgrade to my arranged setup. The tentative day for it is August 19.
