If you thought Bar Mitzvah celebrations couldn’t get any cooler, think again. A few months ago, I had my first opportunity to create something never done for twin brothers Ari and Maddox in honor of their milestone Bar Mitzvah. The result? A jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, 2-minute “hype video” as their entrance video, that celebrates not only their entry into adulthood (and literally, the roaring ballroom) but also their athletic prowess. This vibrant visual production debuts at their celebration tomorrow, Sat, Jan 18, 2025, in a packed ballroom filled with family, friends, and guests, and I can’t wait to see the energy it brings to the crowd (UPDATE: the video premiered and is published below).
The idea of marrying the world of sports with cinematic, music-video-style production was new territory for me—and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever worked on. By showcasing Ari and Maddox’s skills on the soccer field and hockey rink, we created an epic, dynamic visual keepsake they’ll want to watch a hundred times over. I think this should become a must-have for young athletes—and I’m here to tell you why.
Making Athletes Shine: The Magic of Hype Videos
First, let me explain what a hype video is—and why it’s such a game-changer for young athletes. Picture this: fast-paced action synced to energizing, cinematic music, artfully lit video portraits with dramatic flair, slow-motion highlights intensifying every kick and goal, and transitions that feel like watching a professional sports montage. Hype videos are essentially mini sports documentaries that meet the energy of pop and rap music videos, creating a product so shareable and confidence-boosting that your young athlete will feel like a star. Check these out on YouTube.
Unlike traditional highlight reels or photography, these videos are designed to fire up audiences and leave a lasting impression. Whether played to a captive audience like tonight’s Bar Mitzvah crowd or uploaded to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube, these short, consumable formats are perfect for today’s media landscape. Teens especially love them because they echo the video content they engage with daily.
The Story Behind Ari and Maddox’s Video
Let me give you some behind-the-scenes insight into how I planned, filmed, and edited this high-energy masterpiece for Ari and Maddox. Sports are a massive part of these twins’ lives—both play soccer, and Maddox also excels as a hockey goalie. Their love for athletics and fierce competitiveness were the foundation for this project.
We kicked things off one crisp October evening, aligning my 6-hour filming schedule with their practices to capture authentic action shots. First, I spent two hours filming video portraits of each boy as they prepped to hit the field. These quiet, focused moments—tying cleats, adjusting goalie pads, and warming up—set the tone and gave me incredible opportunities to use dramatic lighting and close-up shots to showcase their determination.
The next phase was action-packed. With my gimbal rig for those smooth, cinematic movements, a zoom lens for capturing tight, intense moments, and a drone expertly navigating the lively soccer field of SUSA Academy in Central Islip, NY, I captured Ari and Maddox in their element. As a goalie, Maddox provided some visually striking moments—diving for saves and blocking shots—while Ari’s fleet-footed field play and sharp kicks brought dynamic contrast to the mix.
After wrapping up on the field, we headed indoors for Maddox’s hockey practice at Long Island Sports Hub. If you think soccer is fun to film, wait until you experience hockey’s raw power and icy intensity. Armed with video lights and my trusty drone, we dove into this project’s next chapter, navigating the tighter spaces of the skating rink for footage that matched Maddox’s skill level. The ice’s crispness, the players’ speed, and the dramatic poses during warmups made for electric visuals.
Finally, Ari joined us again for a few closing photos and video portraits of the brothers together, lit dramatically for maximum impact. These last moments were key—they served as the connective tissue between the two boys’ individual stories, bringing them together as teammates in life.
Turning Hours of Footage into Two Minutes of Adrenaline
While filming was physically demanding, editing this entrance video was its creative marathon. Picture this: over 72 hours of editing condensed hours of footage into a 2-minute clip. But trust me, every second of effort was worth it.
Music choice is central to any hype video, so I scouted licensed tracks and presented the family with several options. Once they gave me their top picks, I selected the final track based on its tempo dynamics, energizing beat drops, and emotional build-ups. A great soundtrack is like a heartbeat—it needs to match the flow of the video so perfectly that it almost feels alive.
Mapping the soundtrack allowed me to plan how visuals would align. Long, sweeping drone shots synced perfectly with slower music sections, while explosive beats called for rapid cuts and intense visuals like Maddox diving for a save or Ari sprinting past defenders. Motion effects and transitions amplified the energy, while slow-motion moments were strategically placed to emphasize skill and power.
One notable feature was the inclusion of a countdown at the end. The parents requested something dramatic to hype up the ballroom crowd, so I fused a 10-to-1 countdown with high-drama photos I snapped during filming. Set to tension-building music, the countdown ends with the slogan “Game On!”—a perfect cue for the MC to introduce Ari and Maddox to thunderous applause.
Why Hype Videos Are More Than Just Entertainment
Here’s the thing: these entrance videos aren’t just for wowing a crowd during a celebration. They’re confidence boosters, conversation starters, and priceless keepsakes.
For the boys, this video celebrates their hard work, perseverance, and individuality. It showcases how much they’ve mastered their respective sports and captures their athletic essence with a polish and energy that matches their personalities. Can you imagine their pride in sharing this with their friends on social media? It’s a moment where they can say, “This is me—and it’s awesome.”
For parents, hype videos are a way to honor and celebrate their kids in a way that’s as modern and bold as today’s generation deserves. It’s not just about showcasing athletic skills—it’s about creating a memory that captures a fleeting moment when their child is on the cusp of greatness, both as an athlete and as a young adult stepping into the world.
And for me? Creating this entrance video was nothing short of inspiring. I’ve done dance and music highlight videos before, but working on one for young athletes brought a new challenge and excitement. The effort was tripled, but so was the satisfaction.
Not Just for Parties: The Future of Athlete Hype Videos
While Ari and Maddox’s entrance video is debuting as part of their Bar Mitzvah celebration, hype videos don’t need to be tied to an event. Imagine gifting your child a standout video highlighting their passion, skill, and dedication—whether they’re dancers, gymnasts, swimmers, martial artists, or runners. These videos not only serve as dynamic mementos but also make great additions to athletic portfolios or just-for-fun clips to share with friends and family.
I’d argue that these videos are a unique alternative to traditional sports portraits like for these junior wrestlers, or senior photography, no matter how cool I can make them, even when I shot this swim athlete underwater. Instead of posed pictures, we could capture your teen in motion—doing what they love. Imagine your child’s reaction to seeing themselves in an epic short film that feels like something straight out of ESPN or MTV. It’s an investment, yes, but one that delivers on both visual impact and emotional value.
