Fall foliage family photos are bound to be beautiful but what if you spend all day with a family bursting with energy and ideas?
Building Trust
Here’s a great example of my boudoir client turning into a family portrait client. I never got to blogging about Marina’s bombastic boudoir project early this year. It was massive. Not only did it take full day involving a hair/makeup artist and a stylist, she is also a visionary. Our secret collaboration resulted in a rather striking set of images. On top of that, I designed and published a magazine like never attempted before… That’s what her idea for a birthday gift to her husband was! Can you picture getting a spunky men’s magazine with your wife on the cover, sporting a table of contents, editor’s note, poems, narrative, behind the scenes, and of course, manifold boudoir photos?
By the time I delivered that printed magazine in March, the coronavirus lockdown was in its full initial swing. I buried myself in a few massive projects, including the lockdown documentary, business platform overhaul, and launching my online photography school. By the way, being a founder of Zplay School herself, Marina provided her insight as one of the photography school partner. So, that boudoir magazine blog never came about but here comes my restitution of sort.
Wise Z
Marina was among the prudent clients who was able to take advantage of Zorz Studios coronavirus special in April. The discount was too big to be published anywhere and available exclusively to my mailing list subscribers. Why not go with another full day session, she reasoned, and secured it for later use. Then time for the fall foliage family photos came!
All-day shoots are an animal. So much to pull off! True, they work best for adults needing some deep artistic impact. I’m often told “My child(ren) won’t last that long.” It can work with them, too. The keys are breaks, food, activities, and treats. I’m doing another one next month.
We had six themes in multiple locations in Connecticut where they settled during the pandemic. In the good spirit of the Z family, each had a wardrobe changes. Oh, you should see our worksheets for this and previous photoshoots! 🙂 Marina is indeed stylish and organized.
Boat Ride
So let’s start at their lake house. We took a fun ride on a motor boat to a local beach.

Next up, a brotherly tennis practice. Both play it.
Red Bridge
We then went to the Lovers Leap Bridge. It is red and has the traditional locks hanging around! Gave the boys attention but how can I work on the Lovers Bridge without snapping at least some l’amour? I’m sure many engagement sessions happen there.
New Milford, CT
We stopped in New Milford thinking of getting cute little town shots but only did one spot near a train. It appeared to be converted to some form of housing. The younger boy checked out briefly…
Trains, Antique Trains!
A 30-minute drive further north and we reached the best spot for fall foliage family photos, not only because of colors but also fun kids activities! When you work with children, you have to keep their flame going. Saving the best for last helps a lot. The Connecticut Antique Machinery is like an open-air museum with several cool-looking antique trains. The boys went ecstatic seeing them but we made them do some hard work first.
Then came the fun!!! You can climb the trains and shoot away there!
Autumn Picnic Fun
And here is the prime time of their fall foliage family photos, the essence! Bursts of yellow – check, sunset – check, mischievous boys – check! What can beat getting messy? Getting your parents messy, of course! Thus, with both parents initials being MZs, here’s your E=mz2 modified formula for energy!
Waterfall Portraits
Our final stop was the Kent Falls State Park featuring a 250-foot waterfall. Google says it’s temporary closed but we easily approached the waterfall. A great background for natural family portraits!
It was getting dark already. We got back to the cars, pulled out a bench, an easel, and got the boys paint fall foliage as a little art project. I did a rendition of it for fun.
