My years-long dream of doing Liberty Science Center family photography has materialized, producing megajoules of kinetic energy!
Liberty Science Center (LSC) has been one of the coolest places around NYC to take my growing girls to for years. This 300,000 sq. ft. learning center is located in Liberty State Park near the Statue of Liberty. The institution houses 12 museum exhibition halls, a live animal collection with 110 species, giant aquariums, a 3D theater, live simulcast surgeries, hurricane- and tornado-force wind simulators, K-12 classrooms and labs, teacher-development programs, and the Western Hemisphere’s biggest planetarium. Watching my kids spend endless hours, I could imagine how fun Liberty Science Center family photography could be professionally!
Children and family photography is my long-developed specialty which naturally emerged from the wedding clientele. Working with preteens is usually charged with energy and action so a place like LSC could be a holy grail, with an understanding of what comes with it—unpredictable twists and turns, bursts of action, a load of distractions, attention deficit, other kids getting in the way, parents in the background, tricky indoor lighting, etc. Liberty Science Center family photography is no leisure walk in the park or at your own home and backyard. I was waiting for the right family and it came!
Meet Mayya and her boy band. I first worked with her during the Boudoir Marathon 2016—she is the one gracing the cover photo! Mayya has been a faithful follower and contacted me in spring about a family shoot. When deciding on location, I asked her to describe her family. I’ve heard “wild one”, “full of energy…, pretense, imagination, and play”, “easy going and social”, “chill and happy to participate”. Hey, isn’t it a recipe?! Liberty Science Center family photography, we are ready for you!
Another great thing about LSC is that they are cool about family photography, not only offering help but also not charging a permit fee! I don’t know about permits for other types of professional photography like engagements but I’ve seen romantic LSC photos online; the Center also hosts entire weddings!
Let me conclude this Liberty Science Center family photography story with a touching observation. At the end of the shoot, the older boy showed what modern chivalry is without having to think about offending his able mom. He picked her bag and carried it on. No “You think I can’t do it?” question in mom’s eyes, just love and appreciation. You go, kid, the world needs you.
