Mist is one of the evasive and sought-after natural phenomena in photography, so it gently enhanced this poetic maternity session.
Don’t look far for these two… Their energized wedding took place earlier this year and built a solid foundation for my candid relationship with this irresistibly cute couple. They live in my area and I ran a few times into Alex already, one just a few days ago on the day Anna gave birth! My daughter was with me when we drove and met at an intersection. Alex shouted me out (my car is difficult to miss) and radiated all across the street, prompting my daughter to share a very, very sweet notion about him which she asked not to quote…
From that wedding blog, or knowing the guys personally, you may know that they are silly and fun. I let these traits leak through into the session but the Mother Nature dictated her own mood, demanding a poetic maternity session instead. The forecast promised rains during the day and with not much time left and my limited availability, we decided to keep the date but plan the session for early morning. The reward was this thick mist mounting over the Hudson…
Some know my affinity to studio lighting, whether it is portable or stationary. It is what gives most of my artwork an edge. However, this poetic maternity session is one of rare shoots when I opted not to use it even though I was dragging the gear around. I did not have the full day to experiment with mixing mist and flashes but the natural light was the clear first choice.
We then went to their home and baby’s room for the concluding sweet moments.

And what thrilling session is without something illicit? Why are the cool locations often the ones behind the fences… This sign begged for trespassing, nevermind working as a charm third time—my two attempts to sneak in during other shoots materialized some good-meaning (and one very cute) park rangers.
